What can you make with canned beans?
Five directions for two kinds of can, black beans and cannellini. Each line names the bean, the partners and a rough time; they are starting points rather than full recipes.
- Garlic white beans on toast: cannellini warmed in olive oil with garlic, some of them mashed, on toasted bread. About 15 minutes.
- Black bean soup: black beans simmered with onion, garlic, cumin and broth, part of it blended. About 30 minutes.
- Black bean and corn salad: whole black beans, canned corn, onion, lime and oil. About 10 minutes, no cooking.
- Black bean burgers: beans mashed with an egg, breadcrumbs, onion and cumin, shaped and fried. About 30 minutes.
- White bean and tomato stew: cannellini simmered with canned tomatoes, onion and garlic, with bread. About 30 minutes.
What did PantryPrix suggest for this pantry?
On 24 October 2026 a pantry-only request on a test account, with black beans, cannellini beans, bread, canned corn, canned tomatoes, an onion, garlic, broth, eggs, breadcrumbs, a lime and cumin, returned three recipes: Black Bean and Corn Soup with Cumin (four servings, about 35 minutes), Black Bean and Corn Fritters with Lime (four servings, about 30 minutes) and Cannellini Bean and Tomato Bread Casserole (four servings, about 55 minutes). Each used only what was in the pantry. None of them has been kitchen-tested for this page, and the times are the app’s estimates.
Drained, rinsed or with the liquid?
It depends on the texture you want. Soup and stew can take some of the can liquid, which thickens them. A salad wants beans rinsed under cold water so the dressing is not cloudy. Burgers want beans drained well and patted dry, or the mixture will not hold together. Read the recipe before opening the can, because the three forms are not interchangeable.
How much is in a can?
A standard 15 oz (425 g) can holds about 1 1/2 cups of drained beans, roughly three half-cup portions. One can makes toast or salad for two to three people; soup, stew or burgers for four usually want two cans. Black beans and cannellini are not swapped freely: black beans suit the soup, salad and burgers, white beans the toast and the stew.
How do you store an opened can?
Move leftover beans out of the can into a covered container in the fridge within two hours of opening, and check them daily like any leftover. Plan them into one of the next dinners rather than waiting for a free evening. Dried beans are a different ingredient: they need soaking and a long cook, so they do not go straight into any of the five directions here.
What if you are missing an ingredient?
Any canned bean replaces another in the soup and stew, crushed crackers or rolled oats replace breadcrumbs in the burgers, lemon or vinegar replaces lime in the salad, and frozen corn replaces canned once cooked. The ingredient substitution chart lists 20 common swaps with ratios. Skip the garnish rather than buying one for a single meal.
