More than tacos. Five shapes for an open packet of tortillas.

Tortillas have more shapes than the taco. Folded around cheese they make a quesadilla in ten minutes; rolled they hold eggs and spinach or beans and rice; laid flat they bake into a thin pizza; cut into strips they crisp up for soup. Check whether yours are flour or corn before choosing, because the two fold and cook differently.

What can you make with tortillas besides tacos?

Five shapes from one packet of flour tortillas. Each line names the partners and a rough time; they are starting points rather than full recipes.

  • Cheese quesadilla: a tortilla folded over cheese and browned in a dry pan. About 10 minutes.
  • Egg and spinach wrap: scrambled eggs and wilted spinach rolled in a warm tortilla. About 15 minutes.
  • Bean and rice burrito: black beans, cooked rice, cheese and onion rolled tight. About 25 minutes.
  • Tortilla pizza: a flat tortilla with tomato sauce and cheese, baked until the edge crisps. About 15 minutes.
  • Tortilla strips for soup: tortillas cut in strips and crisped in a little oil, over tomato and rice soup. About 30 minutes with the soup.

What did PantryPrix suggest for this pantry?

On 24 October 2026 a pantry-only request on a test account, with flour tortillas, cheddar, eggs, spinach, black beans, cooked rice, an onion, garlic, canned tomatoes, broth and cumin, returned three recipes: Spinach and Black Bean Quesadillas with Cheddar (four servings, about 40 minutes), Black Bean and Rice Burritos with Cheese and Sautéed Spinach (four servings, about 45 minutes) and Tomato and Rice Soup with Spinach and Eggs (four servings, about 35 minutes). Each used only what was in the pantry. None of them has been kitchen-tested for this page, and the times are the app’s estimates.

Flour or corn tortillas?

Flour tortillas are larger and bend without cracking, so they suit wraps, burritos and quesadillas. Corn tortillas are smaller and firmer, crisp well for strips and small tacos, and tear when rolled cold. Warm either kind for a few seconds in a dry pan before folding. A recipe written for one does not automatically work with the other, so check the packet before choosing a shape.

How much filling fits in a tortilla?

Less than you want. An 8-inch tortilla takes about a quarter cup of cheese for a quesadilla that heats through before the outside darkens. A 10-inch burrito tortilla holds about a cup of filling: spread it in a line below the middle, leave a clear edge, fold in the sides, then roll. Wet fillings leak, so drain beans and let scrambled eggs and spinach lose their steam before rolling.

How long do tortillas and fillings keep?

Follow the packet date for an unopened pack; once opened, seal it and keep it in the fridge, where it lasts longer than on the counter. Get leftover fillings into the fridge within two hours, in covered containers, and check them daily. Cooked rice has its own rules: cool it quickly, use it within a day and reheat it once. The leftover rice page covers that in detail.

What if you are missing an ingredient?

Any melting cheese works in the quesadilla and pizza, any canned bean replaces black beans in the burrito, and kale or frozen spinach replaces fresh spinach once drained. Tomato sauce, canned tomatoes or salsa all work on a tortilla pizza. The ingredient substitution chart lists 20 common swaps with ratios.
