The PantryPrix kitchen · One small kitchen habit

Know your pantry. Skip the big project.

A useful pantry list is not an audit. It is a short answer to “what do we already have?”

Choose one small zone.

Pick a shelf, drawer or cupboard you use often. Keep the rest out of scope for now. For example, start with the shelf holding pasta, rice and canned beans rather than counting every spice jar in the kitchen.

Record the amount that matters.

Use the same language you use when cooking: two cans, one bag, half a jar. Note the package size if it changes your plan. Two small cans and two large cans are not the same dinner. You can refine the list as you use it.

  • Item: black beans. Amount: 2 × 15 oz cans. Location: middle shelf.
  • Item: rice. Amount: about half a bag. Location: tall cupboard.
  • Item: pasta. Amount: 1 unopened box. Location: middle shelf.

Separate what you own from what you need.

Keep a second column or list for shopping. Do not move an ingredient to the shopping list just because you wrote a recipe that mentions it. Check the amount you own first. A household member should be able to tell which list means “buy this.”

Attach updates to an existing habit.

Choose one moment: putting groceries away, finishing dinner, or writing the weekly shopping list. Cross off empty packages and change amounts then. If updating every meal is too much, do a shelf check before the next shop instead.

Add the next zone when the first feels useful.

Once your first shelf has helped with a meal or shopping decision, add another. Keep location names consistent so “top cupboard” means the same thing to everyone. The printable template below gives you room for amounts, locations and your own notes.
