Barcode: start with a packaged item.

Use a barcode when you are holding a can, box or another item with a readable product code. It gives PantryPrix a product to look up. Check that the returned name and package information match your item; a missing catalog entry may need a manual correction.

Receipt: start with the shopping trip.

Use a receipt when you have just brought home several groceries. Lay it flat and capture legible text. Receipt descriptions can be abbreviated, and receipts can include non-food purchases. Review the extracted list before adding it to your pantry.

Shelf photo: start with what is already there.

Use a photo when you want a starting list from a cupboard or shelf. Make the items visible rather than hidden behind other packages. The result is a suggested item list you can edit, not a guaranteed count of everything in the image.

Do the same final check each time.

Look at the item names, amounts and units. Remove duplicates and anything that does not belong. A receipt quantity may be the number of packages, while the amount you cook with is measured differently. Save after the list reflects what you actually have.

Mix the methods as your kitchen changes.

A shelf photo can start the list, a receipt can add the next shopping trip, and a barcode can fill in one missing package. These capture methods are available in the iPhone and Android apps. Recognition varies with the item and image, so keep the review step in your routine.
